Paulo Ferreira was a member of the Chelsea squad that made history by becoming the first London team to win the UEFA Champions League (UCL) title.
Chelsea remain the only London team to win the UCL title though Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have gone close before losing the final. Arsenal could have become the first London team to win the Champions League title as the Gunners were beaten with ten men by Barcelona in the final. Englishman Sol Campbell scored the first goal of the game for 10-man Arsenal. The Gunners had Jens Lehmann sent off in the opening minutes of the game for a professional foul. Spanish team Barcelona eventually won the game buoyed by two late goals from Samuel Eto’o and JulianoBelletti.
On their part, Tottenham Hotspur were in the Champions League final five years ago before they were beaten 2-0 in the final by Liverpool with goals from Mohamed Salah (penalty) and second half substitute DivockOrigi either side of the half-time break.
Paulo Ferreira started the 2012 Champions League final on the bench. Roberto Di Matteo preferred compatriot Jose Bosingwa to Paulo Ferreira for the right-back slot as far as his starting XI for the Champions League final clash with German Bundesliga side Bayern Munich is concerned.
Ex-Portugal international Paulo Ferreira was an unused substitute as Chelsea defended for the majority of the game. The Bavarian giants were under pressure to win the 2012 Champions League final in front of their fans. German international Thomas Mueller scored the first goal of the game on 83 minutes as the Blues’ resolve was broken.
Chelsea would take just five minutes to find an equaliser through a bullet of a header from Didier Drogba. The goal from Drogba forced extra time and then penalties. Chelsea won 4-3 on penalties in the end to make history as the first London team to win the Champions League.
